That printer setup linked by @tanya_Wiesner is pretty cool.
Mechanically the projector based ones are much simpler than extrusion based printers, I don’t see why you couldn’t make your own. If you don’t want to go completely from scratch this kit is pretty reasonably priced:

If you don’t have your own laser cutter or CNC Mill and you want a nice looking finish to your project the kit isn’t a bad choice, and seemecnc has a pretty good track record with their rostockMax…
