Nas has led King’s Disease off with “Ultra Black,” a Black pride song that Hit-Boy co-produced with Nipsey Hussle/Polo G collaborator Corbett. (Nas previously worked with Hit-Boy, the consistently huge producer, on “Royalty,” a Frank Ocean collab that appeared on his 2019 outtakes collection The Lost Tapes 2.) On “Ultra Black,” Nas raps over a laid-back breakbeat and jazz chords, expanding on the beauty and power of Black culture. He namechecks a whole lot of examples: Grace Jones, Essence Fest, Motown, Cash Money, Oakland Raiders gear, Billy Dee Williams, Penitentiary II, Colin Kaepernick.

Nas has announced a new album. It’s called King’s Disease, and it’s set to arrive next Friday, August 21 (via Mass Appeal). He shared a track from the record, produced by Hit-Boy. Listen to “Ultra Black” below.

Nas’ most recent album was last year’s The Lost Tapes 2, which followed 2018’s Nasir. Earlier this year, he joined Public Enemy, Questlove, YG, and more for a remix of “Fight the Power” at the BET Awards. He also appeared on the PBS series Poetry in America, where he discussed Walt Whitman.

Nas announced that his 12th studio album, Kings Disease, will be released Aug. 21 , through Mass Appeal Records. He released “Ultra Black,” featuring production from Hit-Boy, on Friday. It is his Nas’s first album since the 2018 Kanye West-produced Nasir.

The mid-tempo song is a black-pride anthem with a quintessential Nas sound. It contains references to black people’s skin being different shades, black people’s hair, and black people’s contributions to music and culture. At the end of the song, Nas repeats, “black is beautiful.”

Nas has confirmed the impending release of his thirteenth studio album, King’s Disease. As previously promised, the LP was executive produced by Hit-Boy and is due out August 21st via Mass Appeal/Def Jam. As a first listen to the 14-track effort, Nas has shared the lead single, “Ultra Black”.

“We ultra black, grey stone, skin tone, but multi that/ multiple colors, we come in all shades, mostly back,” Nas raps over a balmy, bubbly beat. “Pitch black like a night/ I’m ultra Black/ Sanford and Son rerun jokes are Black/ Oh, yes, oh yes.” There’s a lot to love in this track, and you can hear why Nas was so excited to work with Hit-Boy.

The Lost Tapes 2 actually contained another collaboration with Hit-Boy titled ‘Royalty’, which also featured Frank Ocean.
